The main difference between these positions lies in their focus: the Ship Safety Officer (SSO) is concerned with internal aspects of safety and crew health, while the Ship Security Officer (SSO) deals with protecting the ship from external threats. The confusion may have arisen due to the abbreviation SSO being used for both positions.
