The course "Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats" is designed to equip marine professionals with the skills necessary for ensuring safety and survival at sea, adhering to IMO standards (VI/2, Section 1, A-VI/2, Sections 1-4). The course covers the construction and equipment of survival craft, rescue boats, and lifeboats, methods of launching and recovering them, as well as procedures for abandoning ship and operation in adverse weather conditions. Participants are trained in maintenance procedures, the use of ropes and sea anchors, the distribution of food and water, rescue methods using helicopters, and hypothermia prevention. The course also includes the use of radio equipment, distress pyrotechnics, and first aid kits. Training is conducted by instructors with maritime education and more than three years of experience at sea. Upon completion, a certificate of qualification is issued.

  • Methods of launching and recovering survival craft and rescue boats in rough seas.
  • Actions taken after abandoning the ship.
  • Hazards associated with the use of release mechanisms under load.
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures.
  • Methods for starting and operating the engine of a survival craft and associated equipment, including the use of the designated fire extinguisher.
  • Management of survival craft and rescue boats in stormy weather.
  • Use of ropes, sea anchors, and other equipment.
  • Requirements for the distribution of food and water on a survival craft or lifeboat.
  • Actions taken to maximise the likelihood of detection and location of survival craft or lifeboats.
  • Rescue methods using a helicopter.
  • Hypothermia and its prevention; use of protective clothing, including immersion suits and thermal protective aids.
  • Use of lifeboats and rescue boats with engines for towing survival craft and rescuing people on them and in the water.
  • Radio equipment for survival craft and lifeboats, including satellite emergency beacons and search and rescue transponders.
  • Distress pyrotechnics.
  • Use of first aid kits and methods for reviving unconscious persons.
  • Care for injured persons, including stopping bleeding and treating shock.

Level of instructor-teachers

The course instructors have maritime education and more than three years of experience on seagoing vessels. They possess the qualifications and experience that meet the requirements of Section 1/6 of the STCW Code with amendments and have completed the course "Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats".

Compliance with international conventions

The course complies with international IMO standards, which include requirements for training and competence in the operation of survival craft. These standards ensure that specialists possess the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure safety and survival in emergency situations at sea.
