The course "The Operational Use of Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)" is a generic course designed to train mariners in the effective and safe use of modern navigational technologies.

During the training, participants will learn the basic principles of working with ECDIS, how to properly use the navigational functions of the system while on watch, and methods of data analysis and hazard assessment. The course also covers the creation and configuration of data for all primary and auxiliary navigational functions necessary for voyage planning, and the correction of electronic charts. Special attention is given to the accounting for errors in displayed data and timely action to correct them. Participants will gain knowledge of the basic principles of safe operation with ECDIS and familiarize themselves with specific ECDIS modules.

On the course you will learn to

  • Proper use of ECDIS while on watch.
  • Proper use of ECDIS navigational functions, selection and analysis of all received information, and taking appropriate actions.
  • Identification of ECDIS data and assessment of potential hazards.
  • Creation and configuration of data for all primary and auxiliary navigational functions for voyage planning.
  • Correction of electronic charts.
  • Accounting for errors in displayed data, random errors, and timely corrective actions.
  • Application of acquired knowledge of the basic principles of safe operation with ECDIS.
  • Familiarization with specific ECDIS modules.

Compliance with international conventions

  1. A-II/1: This standard covers the competency requirements for officers in charge of a navigational watch. It includes the duties and responsibilities of watch officers, their skills, and knowledge in navigation and safe sailing.
  2. A-II/2: This standard defines the competency requirements for masters and chief mates. It includes the knowledge and skills necessary for commanding a ship, managing its safety, and protecting the environment.
  3. A-II/3: This standard covers the competency requirements for officers who are not masters or chief mates but must be able to ensure the safe operation and management of the ship.
  4. A-I/12: This standard covers the training and competency requirements for the use of electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS). It requires mariners to be trained in the use of these systems to ensure safe navigation.
  5. B-I/12 paragraphs 36-66: This standard contains recommendations and additional guidelines for the training and assessment of competency in the use of ECDIS. It includes detailed procedures and assessment criteria to be followed during training.

These standards ensure that the course meets international requirements for mariner training, ensuring their high competence and safety at sea.

Material and technical support of the course

The course is conducted in a specially equipped classroom that provides all the necessary amenities for effective learning. The classroom is equipped with places for taking notes, as well as teaching aids and visual materials, including stands, posters, slides, and photographs.

For practical training, an ECDIS simulator based on the NAVI-SAILOR 5000 within the NTPro 5000 suite is used. This simulator reproduces all the functional capabilities of shipboard ECDIS equipment with a high degree of realism. The simulator allows for the modeling of real operational conditions, including the capabilities, limitations, and potential errors of ECDIS equipment. It simulates the operation of shipboard equipment and models the processes and phenomena that can occur during navigation under any conditions, providing comprehensive training for specialists.
