The course "Ship Security Officers" is designed to train ship officers responsible for the implementation and maintenance of security measures on board. It is developed in accordance with the international standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The course content covers conducting regular security audits of the ship, implementing and executing the security plan, coordinating actions with port services, analyzing and modernizing the security plan, reporting on security and eliminating deficiencies, enhancing security and vigilance on board, training on security and safety issues, reporting incidents, ensuring the safe operation of security equipment, and countering attacks by pirates and terrorists.

The course is approved by the maritime administrations of leading maritime nations. Upon completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of a qualified specialist.

On the course you will learn to

  • Conducting Security Audits
    • Regular internal security audits of the ship's security organization.
    • Goal: Ensuring appropriate security measures and levels.
  • Implementing and Executing the Security Plan
    • Managing activities for implementing and executing the ship security plan.
    • Making adjustments and updates to the security plan to ensure its relevance.
  • Coordinating Actions with Port Services
    • Coordinating actions of ship personnel and port security officers.
    • Interacting during cargo handling and ship supply to ensure security.
  • Analyzing and Modernizing the Security Plan
    • Conducting an analysis of the current ship security plan.
    • Preparing proposals for the modernization and improvement of the security plan.
  • Reporting on Security and Eliminating Deficiencies
    • Reporting to the company security officer on deficiencies and non-conformities.
    • Identifying deficiencies during internal audits, periodic inspections, and security checks.
    • Taking measures to eliminate identified deficiencies.
  • Enhancing Security and Vigilance
    • Working with the ship's crew to enhance security and vigilance on board.
    • Raising awareness and responsibility for ship security among the crew.
  • Training on Security and Safety
    • Providing theoretical and practical training to the ship's personnel.
    • Training on security and safety issues on the ship.
  • Reporting Incidents
    • Reporting on all incidents of ship security breaches.
    • Reporting attempts of incidents and measures taken to prevent them.
  • Coordinating Actions to Implement the Security Plan
    • Coordinating actions with company and port security officers.
    • Implementing the security plan for effective management of ship security.
  • Operating Security Equipment
    • Ensuring the safe operation of security and protection equipment.
    • Adjusting, inspecting, and maintaining security equipment.
    • Maintaining and servicing security equipment.
  • Countering External Threats
    • Implementing protective measures to counter attacks by pirates, armed robbers, and terrorists.

Issuing certificates

Certificate of a qualified specialist.

Level of instructor-teachers

The course instructors have a maritime education, experience of more than three years on seagoing vessels, as well as qualifications and experience in accordance with section 1/6 of the STCW Code with amendments, and a certificate of completion of the "Ship Security Officers" course.

Compliance with international conventions

  • STCW Code Section VI/5, Paragraph 1: This section and paragraph refer to the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), which sets minimum standards for the training and certification of seafarers internationally.
  • Section VI/5: This section VI/5 describes mandatory minimum requirements for the training and qualification of crew members responsible for ship security. In particular, it concerns the training and certification of persons responsible for implementing the ship security plan.
  • Paragraph A-VI/5: Paragraph A-VI/5 in the STCW Code contains more detailed requirements for training and qualifications that must meet the mandatory standards set out in part VI/5. This includes training crew members on security and safety measures on board the ship, as well as their responsibilities in case of threats or security breaches.
