The course "Training of officers and ratings responsible for cargo handling on ships carrying dangerous and hazardous substances in solid form in bulk and in packaged form" covers the classification of dangerous goods, international standards and regulations (IMDG Code and STCW), procedures for handling, packaging, and marking dangerous goods, documentation requirements, safety measures, emergency procedures, and practical skills necessary for the safe handling of dangerous goods on board ships.

International standards IMO: STCW Code, Section B-V/b, STCW Code, Section B-V/c.

On the course you will learn to

Introduction to Dangerous Goods

  • Definition and classification of dangerous goods according to the IMDG Code.
  • Main categories of hazardous substances: chemical, physical, and toxicological properties.
  • International standards and regulations: overview of the IMDG Code and STCW requirements, Sections B-V/b and B-V/c.

Cargo Management

  • Procedures for handling dangerous goods: rules and procedures for handling, packaging, and marking dangerous goods, use of UN numbers and proper shipping names.
  • Documentation and certification: requirements for transport documentation, certification, and inspections.

Safety and Security

  • Precautionary measures and emergency procedures: use of protective equipment and tools, procedures in case of accidents and spills.
  • Ensuring safety on board: fire safety, measures to prevent marine pollution.

Issuing certificates

Certificate of qualified specialist.

Level of instructor-teachers

Instructors possess education, qualifications, and work experience that meet the international requirements of the STCW Code with amendments. They have maritime education, experience working on ships, experience in training centers for the preparation of ship officers, and certificates of specialized courses in the safe handling and transportation of dangerous goods.

STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) — International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

  • B-V/b — Section B, Subsection V/b of the STCW Code, concerning the requirements for training and preparation for the carriage of dangerous goods. Includes requirements for knowledge and understanding of the rules for transporting dangerous goods, procedures for handling and transporting such goods, and safety requirements.
  • B-V/c — Section B, Subsection V/c of the STCW Code, concerning the requirements for training and preparation for the carriage of harmful substances. Includes requirements for knowledge and understanding of the rules and procedures for handling harmful substances, as well as packaging and marking requirements.

Material and technical support of the course

Theoretical classes are held in classrooms equipped with tables, chairs, educational materials, and demonstration materials (posters, slides).

  • Posters and displays on UN classification of dangerous goods, physical properties of substances, labeling and marking, packaging types, stowage categories and segregation, use of personal protective equipment.
  • A minimum set of demonstration posters and equipment for practical exercises, including protective gear and tools.
