The "Medical First Aid on Board Ship" course teaches the basics of providing first aid on a ship, including techniques and procedures to ensure the safety and health of crew members and passengers.

The course program is designed in accordance with international IMO STCW standards. The instructors of the course are highly qualified and have extensive experience working on ships. Classes are held in an equipped classroom where training materials, including mannequins and CPR simulators, are available.

The course covers important topics such as gathering information about injuries and illnesses, examination methods, providing first aid for various injuries and illnesses, stopping external and nasal bleeding, wound treatment, applying aseptic and immobilizing bandages, features of transporting injured persons on board, administering injections, detoxification methods for poisoning, patient condition monitoring, and resuscitation measures. Training includes lectures, practical training, competency demonstrations, and written tests. The course is designed for ship officers, crew members, and maritime academy cadets.

  • Stopping External Bleeding: Participants learn various methods of stopping bleeding, including digital pressure, tourniquet application, and tight bandaging.
  • Wound Treatment: The course teaches proper wound treatment and the application of aseptic bandages to prevent infections.
  • Immobilizing Injuries: Training in applying simple and immobilizing bandages, which is especially important for fractures and other serious injuries.
  • Transporting Injured Persons: Special attention is given to the features of on-board transportation to ensure the safety of injured persons during movement.
  • Administering Injections: Participants study the technique of administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, allowing for more comprehensive medical care.
  • Bandages for Burns and Frostbite: Training in applying bandages for thermal injuries helps minimize tissue damage.
  • Stopping Nasal Bleeding: Mastering simple methods to stop nasal bleeding, which is common in maritime conditions.
  • Detoxification for Acute Poisoning: Participants study rapid detoxification methods, which are critically important for acute poisoning.
  • Patient Condition Monitoring: Determining consciousness, pulse, and respiration rate, as well as measuring blood pressure.
  • Resuscitation Measures: Practical sessions on artificial lung ventilation and external cardiac massage.
  • Laying Out Injured Persons: Properly laying out injured persons depending on their condition and nature of injuries.
  • Transporting Injured Persons: Using simple means to safely transport injured persons.

Level of instructor-teachers

Instructors have high qualifications, meeting the requirements of Section 1/6 of the STCW Code with amendments, maritime education, and more than three years of experience working on ships. Each has more than one year of experience in training centers and a certificate in "Medical First Aid on Board Ship," confirming their professionalism and readiness to teach.

VI/4, Section 1:

  • Requirements for the training and certification of personnel required to provide first aid on board. All seafarers engaged in this activity must undergo appropriate training and receive a certificate.

A-VI/4, Sections 1-3:

  • A-VI/4, Section 1: Requirements for the initial training course for all crew members responsible for providing first aid on board. Training should include theoretical and practical sessions covering all necessary skills and knowledge.
  • A-VI/4, Section 2: Details on the refresher course that must be taken every five years to maintain the current level of knowledge and skills.
  • A-VI/4, Section 3: This section describes the competency requirements that a seafarer must demonstrate to obtain or renew a first aid certificate. It includes successfully passing theoretical and practical exams.

These requirements ensure that seafarers providing first aid are trained and certified in accordance with international standards, ensuring a high level of safety on board.

Material and technical support of the course

The course is conducted in an equipped classroom with facilities for note-taking and the use of training aids, demonstration materials (stands, posters, slides, photographs), mannequins, phantoms, and a CPR simulator, providing complete immersion in the training process and practical preparation.
