The course "General GMDSS Operator" is designed to prepare GMDSS operators (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) in accordance with the international standards STCW A-IV/2 and B-IV/2 (paragraphs 29-36). This course covers all the necessary topics so that participants can confidently work with equipment and communication systems. The course consists of 10 sections and includes 108 hours of theoretical and practical training. The training format includes lectures, practical group sessions on a simulator, and additional independent work.
The course program includes training in the proper and effective operation of all GMDSS subsystems and equipment, safe operation of communication apparatus and auxiliary devices, working on the keyboard for radio message exchange, configuring receivers and transmitters for various types of work, as well as setting up antennas and switching to other antennas. Participants will learn how to correctly operate the radio equipment of rescue tools and emergency beacons, transmit and receive messages via radiotelephone and radiotelex, and maintain a high level of acquired skills in using modern communication means and new types of equipment.
Upon completion of the course, students must demonstrate knowledge, understanding, professionalism, the ability to perform duties, and take responsibility in accordance with international standards. Competency assessment includes lectures, practical training on a simulator, methods of demonstrating competence, and a written test, which is allocated 5 hours. The course fully complies with international standards and requirements, providing participants with both theoretical and practical training to ensure a high level of competence in the work of GMDSS operators.
The course instructors possess high qualifications and experience corresponding to the provisions of section 1/6 of the STCW Code with amendments. They have maritime education, over three years of experience working on seagoing ships, and more than one year of experience in a training center for the command staff. Instructors hold a certificate of completion of the "General GMDSS Operator" course.
International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized UN agency responsible for regulating shipping. The standards developed by IMO are included in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
STCW, A-IV/2; B-IV/2 paragraphs 29-36 relate to the requirements for training and certification of GMDSS operators. Let's consider each of them in detail:
The course provides equipped classrooms with the possibility of note-taking. Educational materials and demonstration materials, such as stands, posters, slides, and photographs, are used in classes. Special attention is given to practical training using the GMDSS Simulator TGS 5000.
The simulator is designed to train GMDSS operators in conditions as close to real ones as possible. It allows for modeling various scenarios, including emergency situations, and provides practical skill development necessary for working with GMDSS equipment. The simulator is equipped with all necessary hardware and software, allowing trainees to gain practical experience in a safe and controlled environment.
