CES-test for seafarers (Crew Evaluation System)
CES-test (or Crew Evaluation System) is a mechanism for assessing the knowledge of maritime specialists, conducted in online format and used to determine the professional skills, competence, and performance of seafarers aboard vessels. CES testing is the second most popular after the maritime English language test (Marlins test).
History of CES System Development
The CES system was first launched by Norwegian specialists in 1995. In 2010, CES was improved and brought online through the creation of a special electronic program. Until 2021, the test was taken selectively by seafarers going on voyages on international vessels.
The CES test is conducted in English, but the questions are entirely focused on the maritime sphere.
In November 2021, Ukraine officially adopted CES testing as the main one (previously there was a choice between AST or CES). Passing the exam is mandatory for every seafarer when obtaining working documents.
Unique CES Algorithm
CES testing is used to assess seafarers' knowledge in more than 300 foreign shipping companies. The system gained such popularity due to its unique knowledge assessment algorithm. The test is designed so that when an incorrect answer is given, the system selects subsequent questions from that area, identifying the candidate's weak points. It is impossible to predict the testing, as the system contains about 6,500 questions.
CES Assessment Criteria
It includes evaluation of navigation skills, ship maneuvering, knowledge of safety procedures, compliance with rules and regulations, team spirit, cooperation, and other aspects related to their professional work on the vessel.
A positive result is considered 70% correct answers. However, each shipping company has the right to set its own passing percentage. And even determine testing areas where incorrect answers are not accepted. Thus, having scored the required number of points but giving an incorrect answer to certain questions, another candidate will be hired."}
After Passing the Test
After successfully passing the test, the seafarer receives a CES certificate, and the DCC protocol is uploaded to the electronic account. Assessment results can be used to make decisions about promotion, training, qualification improvement, or to identify areas requiring improvement.
Features of Crew Evaluation System
Crew Evaluation System (CES) has several features that make it a unique and important tool in the maritime industry
Importance of CES in the Maritime Industry
CES is an important tool for crew management, raising safety standards and work quality in the maritime industry. It promotes the development of seafarers' professionalism and ensures effective vessel operation. CES helps improve crew work and contributes to raising safety and work quality standards on board.
