Course Purpose
The purpose of the course is to meet the current requirements of international conventions and the national legislation of Ukraine concerning the training of chemical tanker personnel.
The course is intended to:
- bring the educational and professional competence of chemical tanker personnel into compliance with the amended 1978 STCW Convention, the STCW Code and the national requirements of Ukraine;
- improve maritime safety and protect the marine environment from ship-source pollution;
- enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian seafarers in the international labour market.
Target Audience
The course is intended for masters, officers and ratings serving on chemical tankers who are involved in cargo operations and have already completed the relevant basic training confirmed by a valid certificate.
The course has been developed in accordance with Regulation V/1-1 of the amended 1978 STCW Convention, Table A-V/1-1-3 of the STCW Code, and the applicable international and national regulatory requirements.
Training Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, trainees shall be trained and qualified in accordance with Regulation V/1-1 of the amended 1978 STCW Convention and Table A-V/1-1-3 of the STCW Code.
Trainees shall be prepared to take immediate responsibility for:
- loading and unloading chemical cargoes;
- planning and conducting cargo operations;
- ensuring the safe operation of chemical tankers during the carriage and handling of cargoes.
Knowledge and Competencies
Upon completion of the course, the trainee shall have knowledge of:
- chemical tanker construction, equipment and systems;
- the main types of chemical cargoes, their characteristics, toxicity and degree of hazard;
- hazards associated with cargo operations on chemical tankers;
- hazard prevention, safe working practices and basic first aid with reference to material safety data sheets;
- personal protective equipment and safety equipment used on chemical tankers;
- firefighting equipment and procedures;
- the preparation and conduct of cargo and auxiliary operations;
- requirements for ventilation, inerting and gas-freeing of cargo tanks;
- the effects of chemical pollution on people and the environment;
- pollution prevention measures, spill response and containment procedures;
- emergency procedures and actions.
