About the Course
High Voltage (HV) Training Course for Marine Electricians is intended for Electro-Technical Officers, Chief Engineer Officers, Second Engineer Officers, Officers in Charge of an Engineering Watch, and other shipboard personnel involved in the operation, maintenance, or repair of shipboard electrical power systems exceeding 1000 volts. The course develops the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe operation and maintenance of high-voltage installations onboard modern ships.
The training is based on the mandatory minimum requirements of STCW Code Table A-III/6 for the function of electrical, electronic and control engineering at the operational level. It may also be beneficial for personnel working with high-voltage systems in accordance with the requirements of STCW Code Tables A-III/1 and A-III/2. Particular attention is given to the construction and operation of high-voltage equipment, electrical hazards, insulation systems, personal protective equipment, insulation resistance testing, work authorization procedures, and safe maintenance practices.
During the course, participants study the operation of shipboard high-voltage power systems, circuit breakers, transformers, electrical machines, switchboards, and measuring equipment. Practical training focuses on electrical safety, the correct use of high-voltage testing instruments and protective equipment, work permit procedures, hazard prevention, and the safe operation and maintenance of high-voltage installations onboard ships.
Learning Outcomes
- identify the operating principles of shipboard power systems exceeding 1000 volts;
- explain the construction and operation of high-voltage circuit breakers, transformers, electrical machines, switchboards and associated equipment;
- assess electrical hazards associated with high-voltage systems, including electric shock and electric arc risks;
- apply general high-voltage protection measures during onboard operations and maintenance;
- use fixed and portable equipment for insulation resistance testing of high-voltage machinery, cables and electrical equipment;
- inspect and correctly use high-voltage testing devices and personal protective equipment;
- organize high-voltage work in accordance with established authorization and permit procedures;
- control access restrictions, warning signs, monitoring systems and safety locks for high-voltage equipment;
- perform safe operation and maintenance procedures for shipboard high-voltage installations;
- apply documentation and safety requirements related to high-voltage work onboard ships.
Certification
Upon completion of the course, participants undergo an evaluation of their knowledge and practical skills. Depending on the learning objectives, the assessment may include oral questioning, written tests, objective testing, practical demonstrations of competence, and other evaluation methods specified in the training programme.
Participants who successfully complete the course are issued with documentary evidence confirming successful completion of training in the operation and maintenance of shipboard power systems exceeding 1000 volts.
The training programme is based on the mandatory minimum requirements of STCW Code Table A-III/6 and may also be used for personnel engaged in work with high-voltage systems in accordance with STCW Code Tables A-III/1 and A-III/2.
