About the Course
Safety Investigation into Marine Casualties and Marine Incidents is intended for professionals involved in the investigation of marine casualties and marine incidents. The course develops the knowledge and practical skills required to organize and conduct safety investigations, identify causal factors, collect and analyse evidence, and prepare investigation findings and safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.
The programme is based on IMO Model Course 3.11 "Safety Investigation into Marine Casualties and Marine Incidents" and covers the application of the Code of the International Standards and Recommended Practices for a Safety Investigation into a Marine Casualty or Marine Incident (Casualty Investigation Code – CI Code), adopted by Resolution MSC.255(84). Particular emphasis is placed on the responsibilities of investigators, evidence collection techniques, human factors, witness interviewing, safety analysis, safety recommendations and preparation of investigation reports.
During the course, participants develop practical competence in planning and managing investigations, conducting initial assessments, documenting evidence, analysing technical, operational and organizational factors, and preparing well-founded conclusions and recommendations to improve maritime safety.
