The course «Medical Care on Board Ship» is designed to teach basic and advanced skills in providing medical care on board a ship. Course participants will study international standards and medical care protocols, learn to effectively use medical equipment and medications, and develop decision-making skills in emergency situations. The practical part of the course includes training on mannequins and simulators, allowing participants to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in real-life conditions.

IMO standards: STCW Convention VI/4, STCW Code A-VI/4-2, STCW Convention VI/4, paragraph 2, STCW Code A-VI/4, subparagraphs 4-6.

Certificate of qualified specialist.

Level of instructor-teachers

Instructors have appropriate qualifications and experience in accordance with the provisions of Section 1/6 of the STCW Code, as amended. They have maritime education, at least 3 years of experience working on sea-going ships, at least 1 year of experience in maritime training centers preparing crew members, and a certificate of completion of the course «Medical Care on Board Ship».

  • VI/4 — Regulation VI/4 of the STCW Convention, concerning the training requirements for medical care on board ship. This regulation includes mandatory standards for the training of crew members in providing medical care on board.
  • A-VI/4-2 — Section A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code, providing detailed explanations for Regulation VI/4 of the Convention. Paragraph 2 describes the training requirements for performing medical care duties on board ship.
  • VI/4, paragraph 2 — A specific paragraph within Regulation VI/4 of the STCW Convention, detailing the training requirements for crew members.
  • A-VI/4, subparagraphs 4-6 — Subparagraphs 4-6 of Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code, which contain the requirements and standards for medical care training, including training objectives, practical skills, and assessments.

Material and technical support of the course

For theoretical training, a classroom equipped with tables and chairs for note-taking, educational and methodological aids, and teaching aids (stands, posters, slides, photographs) is used. For practical training, mannequins, dummies, cardiopulmonary insufficiency simulators, and other necessary tools are used. A special classroom is also provided for first aid and medical care training.
