Crane Operator Training Course is a specialized theoretical and practical course intended for seafarers who have little or no previous crane operating experience and wish to acquire the basic knowledge and practical skills required of a crane operator.
The training is conducted in accordance with the requirements of STCW 1978, as amended, Regulations I/12 and II/5, STCW Code Sections A-I/12 and A-II/5 and Table A-II/5, as amended, and the Code of Safe Working Practices. Practical training is carried out using the TRANSAS TechSim 5000 crane simulator.
During the course, participants study crane operations terminology, personnel roles and responsibilities, main crane components and controls, safety devices, operating limitations, hazards, inspection and maintenance requirements. Practical training includes preparing the crane for operation, operating with and without a load, lifting, transferring and placing loads, controlling load swing, communicating with a banksman and responding to simulated emergency situations.

- plan a safe load path taking into account load weight, hook position and hazards;
- operate the crane with and without a load and control load swing;
- correctly interpret banksman hand signals and respond to radio instructions;
- safely shut down and secure the crane following a simulated emergency situation.

Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, a certificate is issued verifying that the holder has been successfully trained and assessed on the elements of basic training I/12 and II/5.
The training is conducted in accordance with STCW 1978, as amended, Regulations I/12 and II/5, STCW Code Sections A-I/12 and A-II/5 and Table A-II/5, as amended, and the Code of Safe Working Practices. The final assessment consists of a one-hour written examination in English using multiple-choice or true/false questions and one hour of practical skills demonstrations. The required passing score for the written examination is 80%.
