About the Course
Handling of Large Ships and Ships with Unusual Manoeuvring Characteristics is a specialized practical training course designed for masters and deck officers responsible for the safe navigation and manoeuvring of large ships and vessels with unusual manoeuvring characteristics.
The training is conducted in accordance with STCW Convention Regulations I/12, II/1 and II/2, as amended, and enables participants to achieve the level of competence specified in STCW Code Sections A-I/12, A-II/1, A-II/2 and B-V/a, as amended. Practical exercises are carried out on a full-mission bridge simulator approved by the Maritime Administration of Ukraine.
During the course, participants develop practical skills in manoeuvring large ships under a wide range of navigational conditions, including harbour approaches, departures, berthing and unberthing operations, operation in confined waters and traffic separation schemes, interaction with tugboats, and decision-making in adverse weather and emergency situations using a modern full-mission bridge simulator.
Upon Completion of the Course, Participants Will Be Able To
- manoeuvre large ships and vessels with unusual manoeuvring characteristics under various operating conditions;
- assess the effects of inertia, draft, speed, wind, current and shallow water on ship handling;
- plan and execute safe manoeuvres during port arrivals, departures and berthing operations;
- operate effectively with tug assistance during complex manoeuvring operations;
- handle ships safely in confined waters, narrow channels and areas of dense traffic;
- make effective use of modern navigational equipment during manoeuvring operations;
- make informed navigational decisions in challenging operational and environmental conditions;
- apply the principles of Bridge Resource Management (BRM) to ensure effective bridge team coordination;
- respond appropriately to abnormal and emergency situations while manoeuvring;
- improve navigational safety through practical training on a full-mission bridge simulator.
Certification
Successful completion of the course, confirmed by passing the final test (and, where applicable, demonstrating practical competence), entitles the participant to receive a certificate of completion for the Handling of Large Ships and Ships with Unusual Manoeuvring Characteristics course.
