Marine Adjuster of Magnetic Compass on Board a Ship is a specialized training course designed for deck officers responsible for the inspection, adjustment and compensation of magnetic compasses to ensure safe navigation and compliance with international maritime requirements.
The training is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Convention, as amended, STCW Code Sections A-II/1, A-II/2, A-II/3 and Tables A-II/1, A-II/2, A-II/3, SOLAS 1974, Chapter V, Marshall Islands Marine Notice 2-011-32 and Panama Maritime Circular No.138. The course is designed to develop the competence required to maintain the accuracy of magnetic compasses and ensure safe navigation.
During the training, participants study the principles of magnetic compass operation, the causes of compass deviation, methods of determining and correcting deviation, preparation of deviation tables, inspection procedures for magnetic compasses, and practical techniques for compass adjustment in accordance with current international requirements and recommendations.
Upon Completion of the Course, Participants Will Be Able To
- explain the operating principles of magnetic compasses and the factors affecting their accuracy;
- identify the causes of magnetic compass deviation;
- inspect the condition of a magnetic compass before adjustment;
- determine compass deviation using recognized adjustment methods;
- perform magnetic compass compensation and adjustment procedures;
- prepare and maintain magnetic compass deviation tables in accordance with established requirements;
- verify the accuracy of compass indications following adjustment;
- maintain the required records and documentation related to compass adjustment;
- apply international regulatory requirements governing magnetic compass adjustment;
- contribute to navigational safety by ensuring the reliable performance of the ship's magnetic compass.
Certification
Successful completion of the course, confirmed by passing the final test (and, where applicable, demonstrating practical competence), entitles the participant to receive a certificate of completion for the Marine Adjuster of Magnetic Compass on Board a Ship course.
