About the Course
Crude Oil Washing (COW) Training Course is designed for officers and ratings involved in cargo operations on oil tankers. The course provides the knowledge and practical competence required to safely plan, organize and conduct Crude Oil Washing (COW) operations, maintain safe tank atmospheres, monitor operational parameters and prevent fire, explosion and marine pollution.
The programme is delivered in accordance with the requirements of STCW 1978, as amended (Regulation V/1-1 and Section A-V/1-1 of the STCW Code), MARPOL Annex I, SOLAS 1974, the ISM Code, ISGOTT, IMO Resolution A.446(XI) and IMO Model Course 1.02 "Advanced Training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operations".
Participants learn the principles of COW system operation, tanker preparation, inert gas management, monitoring of cargo tank atmosphere, operation of cargo pumps and tank washing machines, planning and execution of COW operations in accordance with the approved COW Manual, operational monitoring, documentation and emergency response procedures.
Learning Outcomes
- plan Crude Oil Washing operations in accordance with the approved COW Manual;
- verify ship and equipment readiness for COW operations;
- maintain safe inert conditions within cargo tanks;
- monitor oxygen content, pressure and operational parameters;
- operate the COW system safely and efficiently;
- apply MARPOL pollution prevention requirements during cargo operations;
- monitor cargo pumps, pipelines and tank washing machines;
- identify hazardous deviations and apply stop-work criteria;
- maintain operational records, checklists and logbooks;
- respond appropriately to equipment failures and emergency situations.
Certification
Upon completion of the course, trainees undergo written assessment and practical demonstration of competence in accordance with the assessment criteria based on IMO Model Course 3.12 "Assessment, Examination and Certification of Seafarers" and the STCW Code.
Successful participants receive the relevant documentary evidence of training in accordance with the approved training procedures.
