The "Engine-Room Resource Management" course is designed for ship engineers - chief engineers, second engineers, engineer officers of the watch, and other engine room team members who wish to deepen their knowledge and understanding of effective engine room resource management principles on modern vessels. AVANT Seafarers Training Centre, operating since 2003 with an official license from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, has developed this course to equip engine room team members with critically important skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, and decision-making in complex technical and emergency situations.
The course is created in full compliance with the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) – Sections A-III/1, A-VIII/2, B-I/12, B-VIII/2 of the STCW Code, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS 74) as amended, the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code), and in accordance with IMO Model Course recommendations 2.07 "Engine-Room Simulator", 7.02 "Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer Officer", and 7.04 "Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch". Engine room resource management is a fundamental concept in modern shipping that recognizes most technical accidents and incidents aboard vessels occur not due to equipment failure, but due to human error related to the human factor - ineffective communication, fatigue, insufficient situational awareness, or poor task distribution within the team.
The course consists of 14 comprehensive modules systematically covering all aspects of engine room resource management - from human factor theory to practical skills for emergency response. Professional video lessons from experienced engineer-instructors with extensive sea-going experience, supplementary training materials, international guidelines, and practical documents will help you thoroughly master all course topics. Modules can be studied at your convenience from a computer, smartphone, or tablet. After watching each video lesson, be sure to click the Mark Complete button to proceed to the next lesson and unlock access to tests.
You will gain a thorough understanding of engine room resource management principles and the critical role of the human factor in ensuring safe operation of marine power plants, including analysis of real maritime accidents caused by personnel errors. You will develop highly effective communication and team interaction skills within the engine room team, learn to properly convey important technical information, listen to colleagues, and ensure clear coordination with the navigation bridge during critical operations such as port maneuvering, passage through narrows, or operations in bad weather conditions. The course will build your deep understanding of leadership in a technical environment, proper distribution of responsibilities among watch members, task delegation considering personnel competencies, and taking responsibility for chief engineer and watchkeeping engineer decisions. You will master modern decision-making methods and risk management in normal and emergency conditions of marine power plant operation, including assessing alternatives, forecasting consequences, and choosing optimal actions under time and information constraints. The course will significantly enhance your situational awareness level - the ability to continuously monitor the technical condition of ship systems, recognize early signs of malfunctions, anticipate situation development, and timely detect deviations from normal equipment operating parameters. You will learn to effectively manage stress, fatigue, and workload that directly affect engine room personnel reliability, applying self-control methods and maintaining performance during long voyages and intensive operations. The course will thoroughly prepare you for competent actions in emergency and non-standard situations, including main engine failure, engine room fire, flooding, vessel blackout, and other emergencies where speed and correctness of decisions determine human lives and vessel preservation. You will gain complete understanding of STCW Convention requirements, ISM Code, and IMO recommendations regarding human factor management, safety culture, and ship safety management systems. The course will develop your professional safety culture and conscious attitude toward error prevention in the engine room through procedure compliance, cross-checking, effective communication, and continuous improvement.
Course graduates must confirm their competence by successfully passing a comprehensive final test examining knowledge of all key aspects of engine room resource management. Successful course completion allows you to receive an internationally recognized certificate "Engine-Room Resource Management" that meets STCW Convention requirements and is recognized by maritime administrations of Ukraine, Panama, Dominican Republic, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and other flag states. This certificate is an important document for ship engineers' career advancement, as leading shipping companies require their engineer officers to complete mandatory engine room resource management training as part of corporate safety programs and ISM Code compliance. We strongly recommend taking detailed notes of each of the 14 modules during training for better retention of the extensive technical and management information and successful final test completion. Alternatively, you can use our professionally prepared module summary presentations containing all key course information in a structured and convenient format.
