Age Limits for Seafarers: Starting and Ending a Career

For every beginner, a maritime career starts with a simple question: at what age can you become a seafarer and join your first real voyage? Officially, international conventions allow work on board from the age of 18. However, in Ukraine, document preparation can begin earlier. Another important step before signing the first contract is understanding when a seafarer identity document can be issued. Ukrainian legislation allows a Seafarer Identity Document to be issued from the age of 16, provided that parents give their consent and the applicant studies at a maritime educational institution. This is a valuable opportunity for cadets from Odesa, Izmail, and Kherson colleges, allowing them to legally complete sea practice requirements.

It is important to understand that the start of a career always involves serious workload:

1. Deck ratings often spend up to 12 hours on their feet and perform physically demanding work. That is why most ordinary seamen are between 18 and 25 years old.
2. Shipowners also assess the optimal age for an engine rating. The engine room is constantly noisy and hot, so companies usually look for young, strong, and resilient candidates.

For officers, the age threshold shifts because training and sea service requirements take time. The average age of a ship engineer or deck officer at the start of an officer position begins at 22–23. The starting age for an electro-technical officer is often even higher — around 24–26, because candidates for this position must meet high training standards.

If the situation with young seafarers is clear, the upper age limit is surrounded by myths. Officially, age limits for seafarers are not fixed at the international level, and discrimination is prohibited. But the real labour market has its own rules, and the main question for fleet veterans is: up to what age do shipowners hire seafarers for contracts?

In practice, ratings over 50–55 are often moved ashore, even if companies do so reluctantly. For senior officers, such as captains and chief engineers, opportunities can remain open until 60–65 if they have unique experience on tankers or LNG vessels. The main filter is health.

Passing a Ukrainian or international medical examination becomes harder with age. A medical board may apply strict age-related restrictions because of cardiovascular risks. There is no cardiac intensive care unit in the open ocean, and helicopter evacuation can cost a shipowner hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is why after the age of 50 doctors check blood pressure, blood vessels, and stress ECG results especially carefully.
