About the Course
Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) Training Course is based on IMO Model Course 1.34 and is intended for Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch serving on ships fitted with AIS equipment. The course develops the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe operational use of AIS as an additional navigational aid to improve situational awareness, support collision avoidance, enhance maritime safety and contribute to the protection of the marine environment.
The programme covers AIS principles, system architecture, transmitted and received data, integration with radar and ECDIS, ship data management, safety-related messaging, AIS application in search and rescue operations, operational limitations, and safe operating practices. Particular emphasis is placed on the correct interpretation of AIS information and avoiding over-reliance on AIS as the sole source of navigational information.
Practical training includes operation of AIS equipment or simulators, entering and verifying static, dynamic and voyage-related data, exchanging safety-related messages, interpreting AIS targets, and using AIS during routine navigation and SAR operations.

- recognize the benefits, limitations and operational risks of AIS;
- operate AIS safely in accordance with IMO recommendations.
Certification
Upon completion of the course, participants undergo assessment through written tests, oral questioning, practical exercises and operation of AIS equipment or simulators in accordance with the training programme.
Participants who successfully complete the course and assessment may be issued with a certificate confirming successful completion of training in the operational use of Automatic Identification Systems (AIS).
The programme is based on IMO Model Course 1.34 Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) and is intended to meet the mandatory minimum competence requirements of STCW Code Table A-II/1.
